Saudi Arabia and UAE under pressure: Don’t let Opec plus be politicised


Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, major members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec), have come under pressure recently due to the russia-Ukraine conflict and western sanctions against Russia.The two countries reiterated on The 29th that the cooperation mechanism between Opec and non-OPEC producers, namely “Opec plus”, should not be politicized.Russia is an important member of Opec plus.Saudi Energy Minister Abdel Aziz was asked whether “Opec plus” has a moral responsibility to “expel” Russia while attending the World Government Summit held in Dubai, UNITED Arab Emirates on Tuesday.Abdel Aziz said that when Opec plus meets, its members leave “politics at the door.”Because if you don’t do that, you’re going to keep getting questions like, “At some point it’s Iraq, at some point it’s Iran.”Abdel Aziz stressed that Russia is a major supplier of crude oil to the world, with daily production accounting for about 10 percent of global demand.
